Scholarship applications are now open.
The application deadline for all awards (with the exception of the Learning Tools Bursary) is May 1st each year.
Each year the SSA awards $14,000 in scholarships to eligible students in the Faculty of Science. There are 13 awards ranging in value from $500 to $1000 which are based on academic achievement, community involvement and financial need. The scholarships are listed below:
Award for Excellence in Research
This award supports students who are registered in a science 4009 course and demonstrate excellence in an undergraduate honours project.
SSA Humanitarian Award
This award supports students who are selflessly contributing to the improvement of a community and the world.
Time Management Award
This award supports students who demonstrate a high level of involvement in various activities and have a minimum CGPA of 7.0.
Most Improved Student
This award supports students in their second, third or fourth year and in an undergraduate program who have obtained the highest “improvement factor”.
International Student Scholarship
This award supports students who are citizens of another country and registered full-time in an undergraduate program at the Faculty of Science in good academic standing.
Alexandre Sabourin Award for Arts and the Community
This scholarship supports students who demonstrate excellence in artistic endeavours and involvement in the community.
Gee-Gees Spirit Award
This award supports students who participate in any University of Ottawa sorts club or team (intramural or varsity).
K’leigh Cundall Community and SchooL Spirit Award
This award supports students who demonstrate involvement in the University of Ottawa and in the community of Ottawa.
SSA Clubs Award
This award supports students who demonstrate a high level of participation and initiative within one or more clubs registered under the SSA.
SSA General Council Award
This award suports students who demonstrate a high level of leadership and initiative within the SSA General Council.
Stefan Trynda Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship supports full-time undergraduate students who are enrolled in a biochemistry program and intend to pursue medical studies.
Brar Sisters Memorial Scholarship
This scholarships is intended to financially assist students at the Faculty of Science whose education would otherwise be compromised. Preference will be given to students registered in Chemistry or Physics.
Financial Need Bursary
This bursary supports students in their first to fourth year who demonstrate financial need, as determined by the University of Ottawa’s financial questionnaire.
Learning Tools Bursary
The purpose of the bursary is to cover the costs of online learning tools (i.e. Mastering, Sapling, etc.). Up to 1,000$ is available to be distributed amongst all students with financial need.
The eligibility criteria for these awards, as well as the online application, are available on-line through the Online Scholarships and Bursaries tool on Infoweb. The university’s Financial Aid and Awards service receives and processes applications in our behalf. Therefore, any required supporting documents must be sent to them. Science Students’ Association-Faculty of Science Joint Grant Fund
The SSA allocates several thousand dollars annually to students to help finance their participation in conferences, competitions and other scientific endeavours. Applications are received throughout the year and are assessed by a review committee to help offset the cost of transportation, accommodation, event fees, etc. The contribution to be awarded by the SSA is then matched by the Faculty of Science, doubling the amount of funds received by the applicant. The SSA may choose to profile its successful applicants through any of its media.
How to apply?
Interested applicants must be undergraduate students or presenting research done during an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science. The event or cause must be scientific in purpose.

Applications must be submitted either electronically (preferred) to firstname.lastname@example.org or sent to the SSA office as a hard copy to the attention of the president. They must be received at least 1 month prior to the event to allow time for processing.
The successful applicant will be required to provide a brief report after the event takes place. Original receipts of expenses are required after the event. This report must highlight the successes of the event and describe how the experience benefited the applicant.
