Science Students’ Association Official Statement on Anti-Racism

The Science Students’ Association is committed to standing in solidarity with our Black community. The recent tragedies of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Regis Korchinski-Paquet and every other black person who has faced racial injustice, have left us heartbroken and distressed. We know that these racial prejudices do not end at the border, and rather are very prevalent in our own nation. We also acknowledge that the scientific community has played its part in racial injustices. We hear you, we see you, and we know it's simply not enough to say racism exists. As we learn, we strive to become educated, informed, and proactive. The Science Students’ Association is determined to meet the needs of our undergraduate students, and this statement represents that we are continuously learning and actively seeking out ways we can be better allies to our black students. With our future endeavours in mind, the SSA promises to undoubtedly acknowledge and support, Black Lives Matter.

Science Students’ Association’s Official Solidarity Statement with the BSLA

Equality, diversity, and equity are values the Science Students’ Association hold close as an organization. Recently, the Black Student Leaders Association (BSLA) and the uRacism.e movement have put forward multiple calls to action towards the University of Ottawa to help make campus a more welcoming and safe space for BIPOC students and hold the university accountable in their effort in equity, diversity and inclusivity initiatives. In the fight for racial justice, the Science Students’ Association would like to issue a solidarity statement in support of the calls to action put forward by the BSLA and the uRacism.e movement. We would like to acknowledge that this is only this first step of many in the fight towards racial justice. Progress towards this goal is bound to take time and the efforts of many. The Science Students’ Association strives to implement policies and work collaboratively with external groups on campus to make uOttawa as safe and welcoming as possible to students from all walks of life.

Science Student’s Association Official Statement on Anti Asian and Pacific Islander Racism

The Science Students’ Association stands in support and solidarity with the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community. We are deeply disturbed by the events that unfolded on March 16th and we grieve with the API community in the wake of these reprehensible actions. The Science Students’ Association believes that intolerance, racism, and hate have no place on our campus. We believe the science community is at its best when each of its members have the chance to flourish and reach their full potential. Equity and equal opportunity are core tenets of the Science Students’ Association and we strive to make uOttawa a place where every student can feel safe and respected.
